Truvada Drug Description
Truvada is a drug frequently used in the treatment of HIV. It falls under the category of nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors and anti-HIV medication. It is commonly used as a combination drug during HIV treatment in patients as well as to prevent the disease in patients who have a higher danger of being exposed to it. The ingredients of two HIV medication drugs called Emtriva and Viread are combined to make Truvada. The tablet is usually oblong in shape and bluish in colour.
Conditions Treated by Truvada
The drug is often used in the treatment of HIV infection. It is not known to completely heal existing infection in patients or prevent the virus from passing to other people. It is purely used to help patients who are already affected by the virus.
Truvada Dosage Information
a.) Typical dosage recommendations
During HIV treatment it is important to follow your doctor’s dosage recommendations and advice. The typical dosage that is recommended for Truvada is usually 1 tablet a day. The drug is normally used along with other anti-HIV medicines. You will have to ask your doctor for advice regarding the ideal dosage for the other medications. Based on the severity of your illness and other health problems, your doctor may need to give you stronger medication or higher doses. You must remember to take the medicine at the same time every day. The medicine can be had with or without food. However, if you begin the course by taking it along with your meal, then continue doing so all the time.
b.) Missing a dose
It is important that you do not miss any of your anti-HIV drugs while on treatment. If you do, it may lead to the worsening of the conditions or even a complete relapse. If you realize that you have missed a dose of Truvada it is important to take a replacement dose as soon as you remember, on the same day. However make sure that you do not take two tablets on the same day because it will lead to further complications. The HIV virus in the blood may increase when you miss the medicine for a short time. This is why you must remember to keep a regular supply of the medicine with you at all times. Always replenish your stock before it actually gets over and make sure you carry the tablets with you when you travel. Furthermore, remember to take it as prescribed by the doctor or keep a memory diary to remind you.
A patient may overdose on Truvada by having more than one tablet on a particular day. Typical signs of an overdose due to Truvada may include breathlessness, confusion, vomiting, nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, chest pains, headache etc. Immediate medical attention will be required during an overdose. In some cases, patients may need to be hospitalized if they experience extreme physical discomfort.
It is not advisable to take the medicine if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. It may cause serious side effects if you do. In order to determine if the drug is completely safe for you, undergo a simple allergy test before you begin using it. Alternately, you can check the drug’s ingredient list before using it. Never change the dosage before consulting your doctor; it may cause the virus in the blood to increase. Furthermore, do not stop taking the medicine without your doctor’s prior consent. If you constantly miss having the tablets, it may cause the virus to build a resistance against the tablet. It is therefore important to remember to take every dose. Patients who suffer from liver or kidney problems should take Truvada only under strict observation. The medicine may lead to minor liver or kidney infections. Patients who already suffer from liver related problems should have lower doses of the medicine as a result. It is safer to avoid consumption of alcohol and to stop smoking while on the drug. Alcohol may lead to rapid changes in blood pressure, causing more health problems eventually.
Truvada Side Effects
The HIV virus itself weakens the body’s immune system. It is therefore natural for any anti-HIV drug used thereafter to give rise to some complications or side effects. Truvada may lead to nausea, vomiting, body pain or muscle pain, general weakness and overall fatigue. Some patients may experience a change in their skin colour, change in the colour of stools and change in eye colour. These could either be signs of a liver infection which is common during HIV treatment or a side effect of the drug. Some patients who have a weak bone structure may suffer from osteoporosis. This may lead to fractures that take longer to heal. When Truvada is taken with other HIV drugs it may lead to diarrhoea, stomach infections, sleeping problems, decreased attention span, mood swings and depression, skin rashes, weakening of the kidney, inflammation of pancreas and liver, facial swelling, pain in the stomach, indigestion, intestinal gas etc. While this list comprises most of the common side effects of the medication, patients may still suffer from unique side effects not listed here. It is therefore important for patients to consult their doctor if they experience any kind of discomfort. Doctors may choose to reduce the dosage or change the medication if a patient experiences severe problems due to the drug.
Truvada Drug Interactions
Truvada may interact with other medication you are already on. Before taking the tablet it is important to share details of all other vitamin or health supplements you are on. Avoid taking Truvada if you are already on Atripla, Viread, Emtriva, Combivir, Epivir, Epzicom, Trizivir. These medicines are all used in the treatment of HIV and having more than one of the same kinds together could lead to an overdose since they all contain similar ingredients. Other drugs that you should avoid while on Truvada are Hepsera, Videx, Tenofovir, Reyataz, Kaletra. Keep a list of all the medicines you were on before taking Truvada and share the details with your doctor. Some doctors may avoid prescribing Truvada if you were on any of the above medications in the recent past (up to one month ago).
