Nilandron Drug Description
Nilandron is the brand name for the generic drug Nilutamide that is prescribed by doctors for treating metastatic prostate cancer in men. Nilandron is a type of antiandrogen, used along with surgery for treating prostate cancer which has already started spreading across the male patient’s body. The function of Nilandron is to block testosterone effects which in turn prevents and retards the spreading and growth of cancerous cells. This medicine is an androgen receptor inhibitor that can improve bone pain symptoms and extend the life of patients suffering from advanced stages of prostate cancer who were also surgically castrated. Clinical studies have proved that patients receiving Nilandron lived at least 4 months longer, compared to men who were prescribed with a placebo. This is a prescription drug available in the form of a tablet.
Nilandron Conditions Treated by the Drug
This antiandrogen functions by preventing the actions of male hormones or androgens. Nilandron is prescribed for treating prostatic neoplasms, carcinoma and advanced prostate cancer. The drug is specifically used in male patients whose testicles were removed surgically and prevents the growth of prostate cancer cells.
Nilandron Dosage Information
a.) Typical Dosage Recommendations
Doctors usually prescribe 300 mg of Nilandron once daily for a whole month. Then the dosage is reduced to 150 mg once daily. You can consume Nilandron either on an empty stomach or with food. Consuming this medication on an empty stomach may cause an upset stomach. In that case you can take it with your food exactly as was prescribed by your physician. It is an oral tablet that has to be taken through the mouth. Taking the doses at the same time each day will maintain even levels of this drug in the patient's blood stream. To derive the maximum benefits, treatment with Nilandron should start on the day after or the same day as the surgical removal of testicles.
b.) Missing a Dose
Patients are supposed to consume Nilandron following a regular dosing schedule. If you forget to take a dose, you should call your physician and ask for further instructions. Please do not consume double doses or extra doses to compensate for your missed dose.
Symptoms of Nilandron overdose include maximised liver enzymes, general ill feeling and discomfort, headaches, vomiting, nausea and dizziness. If you suspect a Nilandron overdose, rush the patient to the nearest ER or contact your local emergency number or local poison control helpline. Dialysis is not very useful for washing out Nilandron overdose from the body. So health care providers may pump the stomach or administer activated charcoal for minimising Nilandron levels in the bloodstream. The patient may also require intravenous fluids in case of dehydration and health care providers will also closely monitor the patient's vital signs - blood pressure and heart rate.
You should not consume alcohol while taking Nilandron as it can exacerbate your drowsiness, dizziness and may even cause facial flushing or low blood pressure. Stay away from alcohol while on Nilandron. Do not use Nilandron if you are allergic to Nilutamide or any of the ingredients inside Nilandron. If you have ever suffered from or suffer from severe breathing troubles or liver disease, tell your physician beforehand. Nilandron or Nilutamide can often damage your liver. If you experience vomiting, nausea, pain on the upper right side of the stomach, amber or dark brown coloured urine and yellowing of your eyes and skin, inform your physician immediately as these are all signs of liver problems. In rare cases, patients had to be hospitalised because of severe liver injury. Nilandron has sometimes caused hepatotoxicity within the first three to four months after treatment started. In extreme cases, patients being treated with Nilandron have died due to hepatitis. Another health issue that can arise out of taking Nilandron is pneumonia or interstitial pneumonitis. Contact your physician immediately if you start suffering from chest pain, fever, cough, breathing troubles and worsening breathing problems. If you are trying to conceive, are pregnant or are breastfeeding, talk to your physician who will advise you on your next course of action. Nilandron causes photosensitivity and problems with ophthalmologic adjustment from dark to light and vice versa. Wearing transitional lenses or glasses or sunglasses may help you while you are driving. Be careful while driving inside a tunnel or at night. Nilandron is usually prescribed for older men who have undergone surgical castration and is not approved for treating children. Nilandron is not intended for women and should not be prescribed for the female population, especially in non life threatening or non serious conditions. Nilandron can sometimes cause isolated aplastic anemia but more research is required to establish this hypothesis concretely.
