Lupron Depot Description

Lupron Depot is the brand name for the generic drug Leuprolide which is a type of hormone therapy. It belongs to a class of drugs known as LHRH Agonist and is the synthetic version (nonapeptide analogue) of GnRH or gonadotropin releasing hormone.

Conditions Treated by Lupron Depot

Lupron Depot is used for treating endometrial, ovarian, breast and prostate cancers. It may also be prescribed for non cancerous medical conditions like benign prostatic hypertrophy, infertility and endometriosis.

Lupron Depot Dosage Information

a.) Typical Dosage Recommendations

Treatment with Leuprolide varies from patient to patient, depending on the condition being treated. Dosage recommendations will be decided by your physician depending on the strength and brand of the drug. Lupron Depot is injected once in 3 months or once in six months or once every month. Do not try to alter your dosage by yourself without consulting your physician. Lupron Depot has to be injected into one of your muscles or under the skin.

b.) Missing a Dose

If a kid misses more than a single dose of Lupron Depot, he or she may revisit pubertal syndromes like menstrual periods, testicle growth or breast development. Women missing more than one single dose of Lupron Depot may experience breakthrough bleeding. If you miss a dose of Lupron Depot, contact your physician.

c.) Overdosing

Side effects of Lupron Depot overdose may or may not include low blood pressure, arrhythmias or problems with heart rhythm, irritation at the site of injection, lethargy and shortness of breath. Human beings usually do not experience overdosing syndromes. Overdosing on this medication is not very dangerous or fatal. Even then you should contact your physician or take the patient to the nearest ER if you suspect a Lupron Depot overdose. The patient may require medical treatment for abnormal heart rhythms or low blood pressure or intravenous fluids. Doctors may even decide to monitor body temperature, heart rate, blood pressure and the heart closely.

Lupron Depot Warnings

Women who are already pregnant should not take Lupron Depot as it may cause foetal harm, loss of pregnancy or miscarriage as a result of hormonal changes. Foetal abnormalities are also reported. If you are pregnant or suspect that you might be pregnant or are trying to conceive, you should stay away from this drug. Nursing or lactating mothers should not take Lupron Depot either. This drug produces temporary infertility in both women and men. However, after discontinuing the use of this medication for 24 weeks, patients have experienced a return to normal fertility. Majority of the patients receiving Lupron Depot treatment experience a testosterone surge 50 percent above the baseline which falls back to castrate levels after 1 month. Patients who consume class III antiarrhythmic medications such as sotalol or amiodarone or class IA drugs such as procainamide or quinidine or suffer from congestive heart failure, electrolyte abnormalities or congenital long QT syndrome should be extremely cautious about taking Lupron Depot as it can extend the QT interval. Male patients taking this medication may be susceptible to increased risks for cardiovascular diseases, strokes, myocardial infarction or death from cardiac arrest. Physicians should closely monitor their heart conditions. Another fallout of taking Lupron Depot is the increased susceptibility to diabetes development and hyperglycaemia in male patients, which is why their blood glucose levels must be monitored regularly. Other reported flare ups include tumour flare ups, paralysis on one side of the body, spinal cord compression, urethral obstruction, testosterone surge in blood serum and metastatic vertebral lesions.
