Entocort (budesonide CR)

Entocort Description

Entocort EC is a steroid (nonsystemic) which indicates that the drug works in one specific area of your body. An active ingredient in the drug is budesonide and is used for treating non infectious rhinitis, asthma and also for preventing nasal polyposis. Crohn’s disease is one of the critical conditions that can be cured by the use of this drug. Entocort EC is actually an oral capsule that is marketed by Prometheus Laboratories in the United States. The formulation in the drug gets released in your intestine and therefore controls the signs of mild to moderate Crohn’s disease that affects the ileum as well as ascending colon.

It should be noted that 90% of the drug does not enter the bloodstream. Because of this factor, Entocort EC causes relatively few side effects when compared to other corticosteroids. The drug has lower prevalence of systemic manifestations when compared to other similar medications. Entocort EC is generally taken in the form of a capsule every morning before or after your meal. The capsule should be taken whole and should not be broken, chewed or crushed.

The medication is also used to treat another serious chronic inflammatory disease infecting the intestines called ulcerative colitis. The drug works by way of bringing down the underlying inflammation. Once the condition has been brought under control, your doctor will suggest moving to another type of medication for maintaining. It is important for you to strictly follow your doctor’s stipulation on when to start and stop using the drug.

Entocort Dosage Information

Entocort has to be taken exactly as how your doctor prescribes to you. It is not advised to take the medication either for longer periods or in large amounts than what has been recommended for you. The prescription label on the drug will stipulate you to take the drug with a glass of water. The ingredient budesonide must be necessarily taken before a meal. The adult dosage for treating mild to even moderate Crohn’s disease that involves ascending colon and / or ileum is 9 mg and is the recommended amount.

It should be taken in the morning and continued for a period of 8 weeks. Such 8 week courses of the drug can be repeated when the condition recurs. However, when continued further, the drug will not provide any substantial benefit.

If you have missed dose, make sure you take it when you remember the next time but when it is almost time for your subsequent dose, it is better to skip the missed one. Taking extra medicine to compensate for the missed dose is not recommended.

c.) Overdosing

It is important to get emergency medical attention if you think you have taken more than your recommended dose. However, an overdose of the drug Entocort EC will not create life threatening symptoms but long term use of doses that have high steroid in them can result in lacking sexual interest, impotence, menstrual problems, increased facial hair or acne, changes in location and shape of body fat (specifically in your waist, back, neck and face), easy bruising and thinning skin.
