In certain cases, Activella may be used to treat women who have not undergone a hysterectomy if they suffer from severe vulvar or vaginal atrophy due to menopause.
Activella Dosage Information
a.) Typical dosage recommendations
The drug is administered to post menopausal women only. Under normal circumstances, 1.0 mg / 0.5 mg is prescribed once daily. Estrogen medication is normally prescribed with a progestin to avoid further complications. Depending on a patient’s case history and present medical condition, doctors may change dose requirements. However, Activella is normally not administered more than once a day. Lower doses may be prescribed to women who are being treated for prevention of osteoporosis. For treatment of other menopause related problems or vulvar doctors may choose to prescribe topical vaginal products. However, in certain cases, lower doses of Activella may also be considered. Doctors normally begin the medication on lower dosages and increase the dosage when and if required.
b.) Missing a dose
The medication is usually prescribed once a day. If you miss your daily dose you may experience minor problems like weakness or fatigue. In rare cases patients may show signs of physical uneasiness, vomiting, nausea etc. When you realize that you have missed a dose, it is important to contact your doctor immediately. Depending on the seriousness of your medical condition, your doctors will advice you accordingly.
When women overdose on Activella it may result in severe health complications like extreme vaginal bleeding, nausea, dizziness, vomiting, pain in the abdomen etc. If you have consumed more than the prescribed quantity of the medication, it is important to seek medical attention immediately. In certain cases, hospitalization may be required. An overdose in children may prove to be fatal. The tablets should therefore be kept hidden from them.
Activella should not be administered to patients who have undergone a hysterectomy. It is best to avoid Activella if you suffer from extreme vaginal bleeding, any type of cancer, blood clots, liver disease, any other organ disease etc. Use of estrogen heavy drugs may lead to cancer in the lining of the uterus. Activella is high in estrogen and should therefore be used carefully under strict supervision. The medicine should be used for limited periods of time. Prolonged regular use may lead to other complications. It is safer to administer the dose for short periods of time with regular intervals in between. Estrogen medication increases the risk of stroke or heart problems in patients. Should minor symptoms arise, it is advisable to discontinue the medication immediately. Doctors may need to change the medication in cases where patients show severe side effects. Women with a history of heart related problems should be administered lower doses of estrogen under regular observation.
