Nuvaring (ethinyl estradiol/etonogestrel)

Nuvaring Description

Nuvaring is a medicinal drug containing a combination of the female hormones ethinyl estradiol and etonogestrel. This mixture of female hormones prevents ovulation which is the act of the ovary releasing an egg. The mixture works by changing the lining of the uterus and the cervical mucus thereby making it much more difficult for the sperm to get to the uterus and more difficult for an egg which has been fertilized to attach itself to the uterus.

Nuvaring is available in the form of a plastic ring made of ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer which is flexible and releases a small dosage of estrogen and progestin over a period of three weeks.

Conditions Treated by Nuvaring

Nuvaring is used as a contraceptive device in order to prevent women from becoming pregnant. As already mentioned, it achieves the prevention of pregnancy by altering the uterine lining and the cervical mucus, thus making it much harder for the sperm to appear in the uterus as well as for an egg which has been fertilized to attach itself to the uterine wall. Nuvaring also finds use in the treatment of a number of other medical conditions.

Nuvaring Dosage Information

a.) Typical Dosage Recommendations

It is extremely important that you take Nuvaring exactly as your doctor prescribes. Be very careful not to take bigger or smaller amounts or administer the drug for a longer time than recommended and follow the directions given on the prescription label.

Nuvaring usually comes with detailed instructons so that you as a patient can use it effectively and safely. Make sure that you follow the given instructions very carefully. Generally, your doctor will inform you of the particular day of the menstrual cycle on which you should insert the first vaginal ring that you will use. During the first week of treatment with Nuvaring, you might need to use other forms of birth control such as spermicides or condoms.

The vaginal ring that you inserted should ideally be left in its place for three entire weeks. Once the three weeks are complete, you should remove the Nuvaring on the exact same day of the week in which you first used it. Leave a gap of one whole week before you use Nuvaring again.

b.) Missing a Dose

If the Nuvaring happens to fall out by accident during the three week course, rinse it carefully with warmed water and insert it again into the right place. If it happens to slide down into the lower parts of the vagina, use your finger to adjust it. Make sure that you do not leave a Nuvaring out for more than three hours.

c.) Overdosing

If you overdose on Nuvaring, seek medical attention right away.
